M83 - Midnight City
M83 - the codey-sounding musician may boast a cryptic name, but his influences are worn on the sleeve. Having supported Depeche Mode in the past, M83 (aka brainchild of Anthony Gonzales) share more than a little in common with those forefathers of grandoise synth-pop gloom.
From its cracking razor-edge hook through to the hushed, almost hymn-like vocals, Midnight City is a thing of almost arcane power. What with Hurts already ushering in new-found affection for synth revivalism, M83 looks set to easily follow in their footsteps.
And as the wonderfully jazzy sax outro kicks in, the track sinks even deeper into the accoutrements of 80s devotion. This is retro-pop born in the best of ways, through outright love and affection. It shows in the end results, and boy does it sound good.
