For me, Rodrigo Y Gabriela remind me of one thing – sitting at London’s majestic Wembley Stadium waiting for Muse to come on, listening to the duo’s refined stream of Latin tunes as the sun set. It was a moment of surprising beauty, one that seemed to touch through direct to the soul.
Fast forward a few years and they’ve sold over a million records and collaborated with Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer on the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks – impressive, but seeing them on that Wembley stage, their music always seemed to have the scale to go places.
With their new album entitled Area 52, we were eager to throw a light on some of the mystery – Rodrigo: ‘we felt like Mulder and Scully approaching this; it was just a crazy idea, to see if a big Cuban band could play our music, a step in the dark’. He adds: ‘we knew it was out there, everyone has heard of Area 51, but we wanted to take it a little further'.
Area 52 is released on the 23rd January.
