Jake Morley - Freddie Laid The Smack Down
The trouble with soulful voices is that as lovely as they might first appear, they can often quickly become overbearing. No fear for upcoming singer songwriter Jake Morley though, his vocals are sufficiently light and well-rounded to allow that essential troubadour character to really come through.
With a vast heap of praise from the likes of The Independent and Radio 2 already laid at his feet, Morley has the perfect springboard on which tuneful, blues-laced ditty Freddie Laid The Smack Down can propel him even higher.
The lyrics are proud, defiant: 'never take a piece of my soul' - a refreshing change from the usual love-longing songwriter fare.
Interestingly, Morley's live band contains former Nizlopi double-bass player John Parker, and there's much of the same quaint curiosity to Morley's music as Nizlopi themselves once held. A highly promising singer, that's for sure.
Freddie Laid The Smack Down is released on the 31st October.
