Elsie - The Assassin (Bang Bang)
Up and coming singer-songwriter Elsie is not a girl you'd want to mess with. In her defiant debut single The Assassin (Bang Bang), she channels a gritty clenched-teeth defiant bite remiscent of Blondie against a backdrop of jagged guitar riffs and a whip-crack beat.
It's an intimidating track bristling with the blood-rush of the brawl, a bitter stab at the sleazy, shameless girls who'll offer themselves up to anyone in a club. Smart, sharp and deftly clinical, the track's striking black & white video is well worth a watch too.
We loved Elsie's cover of The Stereophonics, and once again she seems to have found her feet in the foundations of classic Brit-pop - The Assassin recalls the best of mid-90s female fronted acts like Sleeper or The Audience.
Strong female singers are everywhere these days, but it's refreshing to see one turning straight to the guitars as opposed to futuristic synths or replica retro vibes for a change.
The Assassin (Bang Bang) is released on the 5th February.
