Alpine - Quirky
For Melbourne based group Alpine, good pop is all about conjuring up the most delightfully quirky incarnation of yourself. And new single Hands is certainly that.
If Bjork ever went for a more commercial angle, it'd sound like Hands - the track grips a strutting piano beat in both hands and layers over dollops of ethereal, sensual vocals.
As the tight, jagged guitar riffs kick in during the chorus it's hard to imagine a band that are so snowflake-delicate on one level are capable of producing such gutsy music; but produce it they do, and it sounds all the more vital for its self-contained versatility.
Being touted as a crossover between the likes of Metronomy, Kish Mauve and The Knife, Alpine are progenitors of pop gems with a difference - fun and frolicsome, Hands is a delicious bit of catchy ingenuity.
Hands is available to download on iTunes now.
