Natalia Kills - Kill My Boyfriend

It's something of a loss to the general UK music consciousness that if you walked down the street and asked someone who Natalia Kills was, they wouldn't have a clue who you were talking about.

What they're missing out on is one of the best pop debuts in years. Perfectionist, re-packaged and re-tweaked for a full UK release (finally) is packed to the brim with glossy, hyper-stylised tracks - every part of the formula is there, a hot, feisty singer, catchy hooks... but still, the connection to the public seems to remain elusive.

What's happened? Many have theorised what Natalia is doing is too similar to that other esteemed pop connoisseur, Lady Gaga. And listening to Perfectionist, it's undeniable that much of the two artists' DNA is rather similar. many of the tracks could slot easily in to Gaga's Fame album and both women dress themselves in a formidable array of outre attire.

What next for Natalia then? Previous single Free did little to dent the UK charts, even with the aid of Will.i.am - next up, Kill My Boyfriend.

The thing is, Kill My Boyfriend sounds like the odd one out on Natalia's album. While the rest of the record is full of slick, sensual dance-pop, Kill My Boyfriend seems overly playful and upbeat (despite its murder-endorsing title and expletive heavy lyrics). Natalia is at her best with dark, sultry electro, not childlike stompy piano tracks like this.

Listening to the Perfectionist album, you find yourself willing Natalia to do well - as the LP's title suggests, her music is one of studied perfection. It hits all the right buttons and every part of Natalia's persona and style is a conscious effort to create a sense of 'the popstar'. And with so much effort put in, it seems only right she should get something in return. Maybe, one day, the UK will wake up to how brilliant Natalia is - but Kill My Boyfriend doesn't feel like the track to do it.

The album Perfectionist is available to download from iTunes now.
