Boy Mandeville - Gorilla

Certain tracks feel as if they've been crafted from that oh so rare 'just rolled out of bed and feeling absolutely fine' emotion. And Boy Mandeville's Gorilla is one of those tracks. It's one of those joyous anthems to life itself that just make us want to smile ceaselessly. The band have already received support from Radio 1 tastemaker Huw Stephens, as well as supporting the likes of Herve and Bedouin Soundclash and the 27th of May sees them launching the new single at Nambucca. Exciting times.

And now to get the obvious out of the way. Boy Mandeville are very Vampire Weekend, and when I say that, I mean *very*. It's no bad thing though, Vampire Weekend are rather successful purveyors of popular music after all so sounding like them certainly won't alienate anyone.

It's unfair to judge Gorilla purely on sounding a lot like another band though, because in all actuality, it's a really strong song. And in a way, that's its greatest strength. Whereas Vampire Weekend have defined themselves on their patchwork ethic to pasting together chanty, catchy hooks, Gorilla has a far more streamlined feel to it. There's a proper chorus, and the verses do a fair job of standing on their own two feet too. Every part of the track feels as if it has justified its own existence - there's no worries of fatty excess and musical indulgence here.

'I found the sweet harmony here,' resounds the chorus, and it's this searching for that spot of tranquility that Gorilla centres around. From the hushed, friendly vocals to the twinkling jangle of the guitars, this is a track that encloses you in its arms - a real life moment of that 'sweet harmony'.

Gorilla is released on May 30th.
