Britney Spears: 'I love Adele and Robyn!'
It seems only right that one of the reigning Queens of pop music would have amazing taste when it comes to her contemporaries, right? So hearing that Britney is a big fan of Adele and Robyn really warms my heart. More to the point, I still don't think I'm used to hearing Britney actually speak - interviews with the star are so rare the vision I have in my head of her is invariably of her performing, dancing, singing... never sat down having a chat.
The interview begins rather slowly but picks up when Britney starts talking about working with Will.i.am; you really get to see more of her personality coming through here, as you do when she starts spazzing over meeting Brad Pitt. It's all rather adorable.
Also, how amazingly toned and fit does Britney look in the interview?! Stunning! It's fair to say Miss Spears is most definitely back on track.

Twenty Twenty - Small Talk
When I saw Twenty Twenty supporting The Saturdays on their recent UK tour, one of the first things that struck me was the professionalism and inherent charisma. And it's something they carry onto their debut mini-album Small Talk. Eight tracks long, it's a remarkably consistent record that packs a real sense of youthful energy and passion.
The band might draw obvious comparisons to groups like McFly and Busted, but in realty Twenty Twenty represent a harder, more anthemic sound. It's a diferent creature entirely, going forth into a vastly diferent musical landscape than when these two bands launched themselves last decade.
The album is chock-full of fun, upbeat pop-rock - these are songs ready made for a live audience, full of catchy choruses and singalong chants. This is music for the heart, really rousing stuff - lead single Love To Life being the epitome of this. That innate charm and charisma surfaces again and again, the band really carrying an essence of themselves in these tracks.
Girl Next Door sees them showcasing their more gentle side - the song feels genuinely touching, for the everyman feel of it all, if anything. There's an open-ness to all the songs that invites you in, to share in the emotion of each and every track here. Jamie's Girl resounds to a chorus of 'she turns me on, she really rocks my world.' These are songs about simple youthful passions, but they're messages that speak to us all.
In an age where My Chemical Romance headline the most popular of festivals and dominate the Radio 1 playlist, its testament that a harder brand of rock is what the public want, and Twenty Twenty diffuse that into a teen-friendly outlet. They place a strong pop stamp on the record, tracks like Burning Up glossed over with little touches of synths that give Small Talk a thoroughly modern sheen.
One of the things I like most about Twenty Twenty is that it feels as if they've made this album without boundaries. It's not music tied into any particular time or scene - you feel their music could slide effortlessly into the pop charts of any country in the world. There's a simplicity to the songs, defined by a very clean production sound, taking you back to a more carefree time.
Small Talk is released on the 2nd May and can be pre-ordered from HMV here.

Innerpartysystem - American Trash
Fresh from supporting American electro-poppers 3OH!3 on tour, Innerpartysystem have a headline show at XOYO on the 1st June in the works which will see them playing tracks from their new mini album Never Be Content. With the passion and raw energy of gritty, dirty rock at their heart, but twinned with a throbbing dance beat, Innerpartysystem come on like the love-child of Nine Inch Nails and Pendulum.
New single American Trash pulsates with a primal malevolence, the basslines threatening to explode from your speakers. Indeed, the band supported Pendulum on their US tour, delighting audiences across the pond.
For a band named after a term from George Orwell's iconic Nineteen Eighty-Four, they cloak themselves in suitably science-fiction-esque sounds. The bleeps and building waves of synths in the middle-eight carry you away on a sea of bliss as singer Patrick Nissley repeats 'wake up, the dream is over'. And then the thundering chorus collides in again, a mechanistic and unstoppable slab of brute force. It's the kind of track that shakes buildings to their very foundations, that blasts from car stereos on the hottest of summer days.
Innerpartysystem's 2008 self-titled debut was a powerful exercise in rock-dance mastery in its own right - but with American Trash, the band align themselves well and truly with the club, the dancefloors of a nation hanging in suspense, as this track hovers above, ready to beat them into submission. Immensely powerful stuff.

The pop party from heaven - Britney and Nicki live it up in West Hollywood
Britney Spears apparently caused 'complete pandemonium' when she made a surprise visit to a party Nicki Minaj was hosting. Nope, this wasn't some kind of reverse warm-up for the girls' tour later in the year, it was a cool Hollywood bash at nightclub The Factory. Now, in its own right, this would be something pretty special, but we're absolutely loving these quotes from E! Online - they really do just take the whole thing to the next level:
"It was complete pandemonium. Six people were carried out after hyperventilating. They literally fainted when Britney walked onto the stage where Nicki was hanging."
Yes, people actually hyperventilated when Britney came on stage. Well, you would, wouldn't you? Actual Britney Spears. I just have an image of the entire front row at the club suddenly passing out as Brit struts on stage.
The source continued: "People were crowd surfing to get to the stage. Screams were so loud for Nicki and Brit you couldn't hear the music. Bouncers couldn't hold the crowd back."
This sounds like a Fucking Amazing party. Where was our invite?! You know what it's like when you hear, almost Chinese-Whispers style, about a party someone you know has gone to, and wish you had been there. It always sounds better than it probably actually was. But who cares? That instant when your jaw drops as they regale you with their tale of wild antics and the insanely good mix of music on offer, that's what it's all about.
And just for the record; Britney, Nicki, you're welcome round mine anytime you want. Just remember to bring a bottle.

Britney Spears - Till The World Ends (Featuring Nicki Minaj & Ke$ha)
After cropping up on Rihanna's S&M remix, it's now Britney's turn to head into the mix as forthcoming tour buddy Nicki Minaj and wild party girl Ke$ha feature on an extended remix of Till The World Ends.
Rather fitting, in a way, seeing as Ke$ha co-wrote the track. Nicki's rap is suitably fierce, as you might imagine, but I'm yet to be completely sold on this version. Take a listen below though and see what you think:

Miley, we'd love you to come and tour in the UK!
Amazing popstar and all round awesome person Miley Cyrus has been speaking to American news agency The AP about plans for her new world tour. The chain of gigs in support of her Can't Be Tamed album kicks off in Ecuador at the end of April and includes 13 South American dates before she moves on to 7 dates in Australia in July.
Miley explained she had no immediate plans to tour her home country of the US though, saying: "I just think right now America has gotten to a place where I don't know if they want me to tour or not. Right now I just want to go to the places where I am getting the most love and Australia and South America have done that for me."
Well, can I be the first to say to you Miley, here in the UK we absolutely love you! Miley's 2009 Wonder Word Tour was incredible, and going to see it at one of the five dates she did at London's O2 arena, I can testify that it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen at the venue. Can't Be Tamed was amongst my Top Five favourite albums of last year and to see all the new tracks performed live is a must. Her GAY performance gave a taste of what we might expect and the thought of that transposed up to an arena scale is all very exciting. So yes, Miley, please come and tour in the UK again!
Plus, how fantastic is it that Miley is now back on Twitter? @mileycyrus

Kylie Minogue - Live at the O2 Arena, 9th April 2011
Kylie Minogue will always hold a special place in my heart. Growing up, her music represented a soundtrack to countless memories and emotions; and looking back now, there is a song for every occasion. Aphrodite was one of my favourite albums of last year; All The Lovers confirming her place as one of the most inspiring and magical artists in pop. And for that to stand true over twenty years since her first single was released makes the matter all the more impressive.
With an artist like Kylie, the fact that she blows pretty much every other live concert out of the window goes without saying, leaving the most logical comparisons being with her previous tours. The thing that struck me most was the more naturalistic feel of Les Folies compared to X2008 and Showgirl Homecoming. It might seem a strange thing to say considering the pure opulence of set design and costumes on offer, yet the observation comes less from what Les Folies contained, but more about what its predeccesors did.
Showgirl Homecoming was the big comeback gig (and in my opinion, still the best Kylie gig to date, in many respects due to its virtue as a 'greatest hits' tour, something 'album tours' can find hard to compete with). Then came X2008, Kylie proving herself in a new, rapidly changing age of pop music as well as serving to help boost the relatively low sales of the X album and its singles. These concerts were so immensely extravagent and often futuristic, a physical push to knock the critics back in their track and to say with complete confidence that Kylie was here to stay. But now, with Les Folies tour and the Aphrodite album, Kylie has assured her place in pop for all eternity.
She has finally truly achieved that which she seemed on the cusp of for so long; untouchable national treasure. Thus, she no longer needs to prove herself to her critics; giving her unparraleled freedom to do what she wants with her music and tour. And that freedom really shows. In her performances Kylie is impeccably cheery, radiant and upbeat. And it transmits through to the audience too - they're all up on their feet partying away, clapping along - having the time of their lives. Tonight, Kylie is the friend of each and every person here - those who hold so much adoration for her and her music. Les Folies is a celebration of that adoration.
The songs felt brisk, muscular; as if they'd all been given an extra spring in their step. The costumes and dancing became an integral part of every track. Kylie riding on a winged dancer above the audience while singing a cover of the Eurythmics There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart) was a physical embodiment of this - the unity between Kylie, the design of the show, and the songs all combined effortlessly into one.
I must admit, I was surprised at how Aphrodite-heavy the gig was in terms of the number of tracks from the album. Obviously, as a tour in support of the record, some of these songs were to be expected, but that also means less space for the singles. And when you have as many singles as Kylie, it's impossibly difficult to choose which ones to include - everyone has their favourites. But equally, there are those classics that are everyone's favourites. Better The Devil You Know and an inspired rock version of Can't Get You Out Of My Head are met with immense cheers.
It was the less obvious song choices that were the most moving though - as I mentioned above, with the new freedom Kylie seemed to convey herself with, the concert is opened up to incorporate tracks like Confide In Me (a personal favourite of mine and re-done here in a fantastic dance mix) and If You Don't Love Me. A cover of the Prefab Sprout song and originally serving as Confide In Me's b-side back in 1994, it was a pure delight to see the song resurrected like this. Delivered as an incredibly touching, stripped back piano ballad, it stood as a defiant testament to anyone who still tries to criticise Kylie's vocals. Here, she was flawless, hitting every high note in a performance that was truly angelic.
In terms of pure visual spectacle, the finale must be mentioned, for it is this that stays with me as the pinnacle of the gig; the memory that will stay with me for years to come. Actual water fountains appeared on stage, shooting over ten feet into the air. They then proceeded to flick out into the specially designated 'splash zone', the audience members located there quickly donning blue ponchos to protect their clothes. That in its own right would be more than impressive, but Kylie is always one to go the extra mile. The fountains flashed through a rainbow spectrum of colours as she walked out to the end of the catwalk which had now transformed into a swimming pool. Dancers climbed into the water around her and all were lifted up on a tiered wedding-cake like construction, resulting in a faithful recreation of the mountain of scantily clad bodies from the All The Lovers video.
The concert also served to envision certain tracks in a new light - In My Arms, third single from the X album campaign, placed directly after Can't Get You Out Of My Head became reinvigorated; feeding off the energy generated by the previous track, and went down exceedingly well. Likewise, an inspired mash-up of Love At First Sight with Can't Beat That Feeling paired old and new Kylie effortlessly. It was great to see SAW number What Do I Gave To Do make an appearance too, a highlight from the brief era of what I like to call 'RaveKylie'. Then there was Slow, which transformed mid-way from a sultry jazz number to all-out club banger.
My overall impression of the gig was of it as a thoroughly professional and incredibly fun exercise in an artist that stands at the very height of popstardom. Kylie really is in a league of her own. She delivers on every single level. In many ways, a Kylie concert is a full-on stage musical - and in that respect you can quite easily see how she's able to sell out date after date of a venue like the O2 Arena. This is an 'event gig', a must see experience. When you to see Kylie, you get more than just music; you get the wonderous staging, the elegance of the immaclately choreographed dancer, but most of all, you get Kylie, the persona - the essence that has won the hearts of millions worldwide.

Nervo & Jessie And The Toy Boys to tour with Britney Spears!
The world of pop currently stands with baited breath while we wait for Britney's big tour announcement on Twitter. In the mean time though, delightful duo Nervo have also taken to Twitter with an announcement of their own, tweeting:
"So,(we didn't get a track on her album but) we-are-going-on-tour-in-the-US-with-BRITNEY-F-ing-SPEARS AND NICKI MINAJ !-!-!-!-!-!-!-!-!-!-!"
They sound pretty excited, to say the least. I guess this is a kind of confirmation that Nicki is supporting Britney too - though we imagine it'll all be properly confirmed by both parties later.
As well as Nervo, Jessie And The Toy Boys will also be joining Miss Spears, Nervo revealing all as they followed up their initial tweet with:
"@JessieToyBoys @NickiMinaj @BritneySpears SO EXCITED to be on tour with you wicked ladies !!!!! Fun times ahead!!!!"
We imagine the tour news is what Jessie was hinting at when she tweeted "BIG announcement tomorrow morning :)"

Funeral For A Friend - Live at The Grove Tavern, Wimbledon - 8th April 2011
'We're gonna have a good fucking night tonight,' cries Funeral for a Friend lead singer Kris Coombs-Roberts, the crowd of adoring fans arrayed before him lapping up every word.
It's something we all have to do once in life; a small, intensely intimate gig in a good, proper old fashioned pub in the heart of suburbia. This is rock n' roll. The Grove Tavern is a place I've driven past countless times without a second thought, but tonight it was to play host to the beloved Welsh rockers, fresh from releasing their latest album Welcome Home Armageddon.
With a band like this, you're guaranteed the hardcore loyal fans, and they were out in force tonight; packing the tight confines of the pub - a wall of the adoring public, here for the music.
Roses for the Dead kicked things off with a bang, the enraptured audience singing every single word. Fuelled by beer and sheer passion, the fans carried the song on to anthemic heights; making it feel bigger and more powerful than you could scare believe a small pub like this could contain.
Rookie of the Year followed and hands were up and waving across the venue and as the band moved on to debut single Juneau with its anthemic chorus of 'I'm nothing more than a line in your book' the ecstacy reached a climax. The sound built and built, big chunky guitar riffs merging into something almost physical. It moved people.
Sweat, bedraggled fans burst from the crowd to line up more drinks; clambering from the mass of bodies crying 'Fuck... fuck...' in pure joy. This is the magic of the old tracks from 2003 album Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation - these are songs people have grown up with, music that means something. For each and every one of this audience, these songs will be tied to memories, emotions; unfolding into a story in their own right.
At the front, closest to the band, bodies visibly swayed back and forth, a tide of people moving to the music. Coombs-Roberts would regularly stop in between songs to check if everyone is ok, telling the crowd to enjoy their own space and have a safe night. It was a moment of touching sincerity - really emphasising the bond between the band and their loyal fans. 'Don't get people at the front killed!' he urged.
Tracks like Red is the New Black also got a showing while the duo of singles Monsters and History from the Hours album were fucking quality. And that really is the best way to describe a gig like this; quality. This was Funeral for a Friend in their element. The band, the venue, the fans, and most importantly, the music. Good old fashioned fun and the memories of an awesome night for each and every person there to take away with them.

Pet Shop Boys to support Take That - Oh, you'll like them...
When the Pet Shop Boys were announced as the support act for Take That's forthcoming stadium tour, I was ecstatic. Talk about a dream pop combo. A 40 minute slot too, basically their own little gig in its own right. Not everyone was quite as excited as I was though. A brief scan across fan reaction on Twitter presented a less rosy picture.
You'd get the rather predictable cries of 'Who?!' or 'Support acts should be new bands, not oldies.' Oh dear. It was rather disappointing to see the Take That fans so disengaged, even though every news article about the story featured quotes from the TT boys singing the praises of the Pet Shop Boys.
People are entitled to like who they like, but there's a base level of 'knowledge' when it comes to music surely? People's tastes differ, but success and sales figures are hard, cold facts that can't be argued with. Even if you didn't like the Pet Shop Boys, you'd have to admit their impact on popular music across the last three decades is undeniable. You wish sometimes that people would just open their minds a little more...
Imagine a whole stadium singing along to Go West... pretty damn impressive eh? Wembley is world-renowned for its atmospheric feel; it's steeped into the very building itself, right down to the construction details.
At the end of the day, the Pet Shop Boys are confirmed now, so for any sceptics, the best advice is just to go along and see how it goes. You never know, you might just like it.

The Devil's Conspiracy - Return To Sender EP
Hampshire and Surrey based rock trio The Devil’s Conspiracy are set to hit the live circuit soon, supporting Love Amongst Ruin on their UK tour. The band’s EP Return To Sender echoes many of the sounds of the band they’re opening for, expansive walls of guitar noise that flow effortlessly from moments of melodic ambience to raw, frenetic power chords.
In Denial and I Want To Burn Like You are big punky tracks that seem infused with the sense of freedom. I remember back in my youth I used to play the racing videogame Burnout and tracks like this would serve as the perfect soundtrack to it. There’s that energy, speed, with a rebellious edge... a sense of adventure.
With three years of touring behind them, you can almost taste the enthusiasm in the tracks – this a band that lives for the thrill of it all. Sound-wise, The Devil’s Conspiracy come with touches of You Me At Six and Feeder, as well as echoing many of the elements of Love Amongst Ruin themselves. Those looking for more tender moments need look no further than the EP's title track – it’s perhaps this song most of all where the band’s skill, versatility and musicianship shines most brightly.

Introducing... The Ultra Girls
Supporting Kylie Minogue is a pretty big gig. Her previous KylieX2008 tour didn’t even have a support act. So The Ultra Girls must be feeling amazing right now as they have the exclusive honour of going on tour with Kylie for her Aphrodite Les Folies arena dates.
So who exactly are The Ultra Girls? Well, they’re a trendy looking new four-piece girl group consisting of Lucy, Lauren, Amy and Laura. “We’re young and fun. We want you to dance with us, wear your trackies with us and go crazy,” they say. “It’s not ‘look how sexy we are’ its girls singing about girls lives, not taking it too seriously or being too polished.” Attitude is a key ingredient for girl groups and these girls seem to have it in bucketloads.
One of our favourite things about them is that Lauren used to be in a tribute band with Tom from The Wanted. He’d sing Take That covers and she’d do Girls Aloud tracks. A good taste in great pop songs always wins us over so we’re liking this little factoid a lot. The team surrounding them is amazing too, including music-mastermind Steve Anderson (the man responsible for producing Kylie’s mind-blowingly good Impossible Princess album, which most hardcore Kylie fans agree is her best). There’s also stylist Kenny Ho on hand, who’s an experienced hand when it comes to girl groups, having worked in the past with the Spice Girls and Girls Aloud.
The band have got a couple of free downloads available on their website/Facebook page at the moment, including a genius mash-up of P!nk’s Get The Party Started and Blur’s Brit-pop anthem Song 2. It’s fresh, feisty and full of attitude. Even better is their gorgeous chilled acoustic version of The Wanted’s Lose My Mind; this one lets the girls really show off their vocals and fans of stuff like Pixie Lott’s cover of Use Somebody will love this. The harmonies in the chorus are spot on and remind us of The Saturdays when they were just starting out in 2008. The Sats started out supporting a much-loved pop act too, and now represent one of the biggest and best British acts around, so the future looks very bright for The Ultra Girls. We can’t wait to hear more from them!

Ellie Goulding - Live at the Reading Hexagon
Ellie Goulding
26th November 2010
Reading Hexagon
Ellie Goulding really is the success story of the year and tonight’s gig is the affirmation of that success. “We love you Ellie!” scream various members of the crowd, working themselves into a frenzy as the cheery, young songstress works her way through the hits of her brilliant No. 1 album Lights. Pounding out a drum beat herself to the opening bars of the dancey, seductive Under The Sheets, Ellie even manages to work in a little dancing too.
There’s a real sense of a bond between singer and audience here, playing off each-other’s energy. For many of the songs Ellie plays acoustic guitar, and her vocals are always note perfect. Her talent is undeniable, and even better, she comes with bucketloads of charm too – between songs Ellie chats to the audience, almost not quite able to believe everyone in the room is there for her. From the sweet balladry of The Writer to her fantastic cover of Elton John’s Your Song, (currently doing the rounds on John Lewis TV adverts) all eyes are on her.
Come the gig’s triumphant finale, the crowd’s voices fill the Hexagon, singing along to the dreamy Starry Eyed as Ellie cries “I’m feeling sexy, let’s move!” All this contributes to a new, more glossy, more confident Ellie Goulding. When I saw her play the Shepherd’s Bush Empire back in the summer, her fame was still very much in the ascendency – she was the rising star. But now, coming to the end of a full UK tour, we have the complete, fully fledged star. And she’s amazing.
