Cover Drive - Sparks [Official Video]

We reckon Cover Drive's excellent new single Sparks is going to be one of the biggest pop tunes of the coming months, and to boot, it's now got a suitably glossy video to go with it too. Positioning the band as the proper mega-stars in ascendance they are very much on the cusp of becoming, the video has all the sleek, styled confidence of the track itself and frankly makes us want to join the Cover Drive 'gang'. We wonder if they'll let us hang out with them?

In an age of iPods and iPhones, cover artwork often doesn't seem to count for much any-more; particularly in the case of singles. Indeed, I'm sure I've seen on numerous occasions recently, singles being pushed out on iTunes with nothing more than a generic lick of coloured background and nice font.

But Cover Drive's Sparks single cover, well, it looks like a proper POP single cover, like we used to so avidly buy into down our local Woolworths back in the day. And considering the song is ace too, this would very much convince us to part with our cash and download said song.

Much can be said for those gorgeous, special songs that capture the aspects of love in the most reflective and sweetly heart-aching ways. If Cover Drive’s Twilight was the up-beat life-anthem, a soundtrack to tropical-kissed nights out on the town, then follow-up single Sparks is the unleashed pinning for that one and only as the night-proper sets in. That chorus hook of ‘happy to see you, setting me off like sparks, unite all the colours inside my heart’ is just divine, the kind of pop lyric that while on a base level so simple, cuts to the truth of feelings we’ve all felt so many times. Sparks wonderfully twins Amanda’s sensual Barbadian vocals with more of that dreamy EuroPop sound they put to such good use on Twilight, but now with an almost Gothic melancholy to affairs. Sparks is another definite firm step along the path of chart domination, and as a group, Cover Drive’s mixed female/male dynamic is a refreshing jolt of life into radio-friendly pop.

Sparks is released on the 23^rd April.
